Grade K0-K1: Working on classroom songs which help reinforce our sense of physical space, number sense, and the alphabet. We practice identifying high and low sounds, as well as keeping a steady beat while we sing. In these classes we are instilling a basic sense of music by exploring many childhood and church/worship songs. And of course, there are music games and dancing galore.
K2: Students in K2 are exploring the basic building blocks of music. In term one, we are learning about Musical Pitch and identifying high and low notes. K2 is also exploring the difference between slow and fast songs through movement and songs. We learn songs from all over the world, and use them to reinforce basic musical concepts such as rhythm and speed. Grade 1: Students are learning about the many percussion instruments we have in the music room. By the end of Term 1 students will be able to read notated rhythm,s and play them on various percussion instruments. Student work daily to understand rhythm through copying preset rhythms and creating their own! Grade 2: Grade two is currently learning the more advanced building blocks of rhythm! Soon we will begin to use our rhythms to write our percussion songs. Once we have mastered this we will move on to reading music! We will use these tools daily in fun exercises which focus on global music, and expressing story through beat and song! Grade 3: In term one we touched in the topic of folk music, both American and European. We studied how folk music is defined and generated. While learning the history of the folk music, we study the people and instruments used to produce the songs. Its a great way to learn all those classic American tunes! Grade 4: Grade 4 is studying the musical instruments of the orchestra. We study each section of the orchestra, the instruments, and their role in orchestral works. We even get to watch them get made! Students are able to identify different instruments by both their physical/visual and aural cues. We love listening to modern songs on classical instruments! Grade 5: Grade 5 will be working this year to understand all the major elements of music! We begin with more complicated written rhythms and then add in pitch identification. This is calling back to all the skills students have worked on over the years, and focusing them on a cumulative task. Grade 6: Over the course of the year, 6th grade will be studying composers from around the world! When studying each composer we take a few weeks to talk about their significance, and learn a new element of music through the lens of how the composer used that element in their music. While we start with classical composers, we will move on to more modern composers like John Williams and John Legend.
